John Cage\u2019s Ten Rules for Merce Cunningham\u2019s dance studio has been making the rounds online this summer, so you may have already seen it, but for those of you haven\u2019t come across it yet, I thought I\u2019d repost it because it\u2019s worth seeing!<\/p>\n

Choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage were lifelong partners and collaborators – John Cage was the music director of Cunningham\u2019s dance studio and had a profound influence on Cunningham.<\/p>\n

I love these rules from John Cage for so many reasons.\u00a0 I could go on and on.\u00a0 But perhaps it\u2019s better if I just let the rules speak for themselves.\u00a0 Enjoy!<\/p>\n

10 Rules for Students and Teachers<\/strong><\/p>\n

From John Cage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Rule 1<\/strong>: Find a place you trust, and then, try trusting it for awhile.<\/p>\n

Rule 2<\/strong>: (General Duties as a Student)\u00a0Pull everything out of your teacher. \u00a0Pull everything out of your fellow students.<\/p>\n

Rule 3<\/strong>: (General Duties as a Teacher) Pull everything out of your students.<\/p>\n

Rule 4:<\/strong>\u00a0 Consider everything an experiment.<\/p>\n

Rule 5:<\/strong>\u00a0 Be Self-Disciplined.\u00a0 This means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them.\u00a0 To be disciplined is to follow in a good way.\u00a0 To be self-disciplined is to follow in a better way.<\/p>\n

Rule 6:<\/strong>\u00a0 Follow the leader.\u00a0 Nothing is a mistake. \u00a0 There is no win and no fail.\u00a0 There is only make.<\/p>\n

Rule 7:\u00a0<\/strong> The only rule is work.\u00a0 If you work it will lead to something.\u00a0 It is the people who do all the work all the time who eventually catch onto things.\u00a0 You can fool the fans – but not the players.<\/p>\n

Rule 8:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do not try to create and analyze at the same time.\u00a0 They are different processes.<\/p>\n

Rule 9:\u00a0<\/strong> Be happy whenever you can manage it.\u00a0 Enjoy yourself.\u00a0 It is lighter than you think.<\/p>\n

Rule 10:<\/strong> We are breaking all the rules, even our own rules, and how do we do that?\u00a0 By leaving plenty of room for \u201cx\u201d qualities.<\/p>\n

Helpful Hints:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Always be around.<\/p>\n

Come or go to everything<\/p>\n

Always go to classes.<\/p>\n

Read everything you can get your hands on.<\/p>\n

Look at movies carefully and often.<\/p>\n
